My name is Mwalimu Shakur
I am a 48 year-old New Afrikan freedom fighter who’s been incarcerated for 16 years and 13 of those years have been spent in solitary confinement. In California, solitary confinement is called “the SHU,” security housing unit, for becoming conscious. This happens when you read and study your history and practice your culture. We call this becoming re-educated.

I first came to prison in 1994 for selling drugs, which was common practice in the inner cities across this country. What I learned was by design. Our community was meant to be that way, and that the class of people responsible for it was the 1% class. The Government never meant for us Black and Brown/Latinos, Asians, First Nation Peoples, and poor Whites to be successful. We were the ones they oppressed through their capitalist economic system (the 99%), where those who owns the means of production and distribution extract the surplus value of workers’ labor as profit, which is the primary motiving force of production in society.

What we’ve found to be the best solution to solve our own problems is to first build re-education schools of liberation throughout these prisons camps, and create our own programs designed to allow us to become self-sufficient. Our goal is to transform the values of people where they can practice and establish new relationships that will prepare conditions for revolution, and transform their communities into productive areas where there’s progress, growth, and development in all areas (such as, equality, free education, and a safe haven for children to play and where all lives matter).
